Re: what book would you recommend
Sat, May 13, 2006 - 4:56 PMI really liked The Laughing Jesus by Timothy Freke and the other guy who's name I can never remember. It had some very interesting stuff in it, a lot of really good explanations and even some exercises that the reader could do. It was a nice primer to the idea of Gnosticism. I have read several of Freke's other books as well and enjoyed them all.

Sun, May 14, 2006 - 1:04 AMI have read some of Freke and Gandy's stuff too, it is certainly accessible. Elaine Pagel's The Gnostic Gospels is good too. -

Re: what book would you recommend
Sun, May 14, 2006 - 8:21 PMLiving Gnosis by Tau Malachi is a basic intro to Gnosticism based on the teachings of a wisdom tradition that survived at least a few hundred years. It touches upon all the basic concepts, Demiurge, Gnosis and Faith, as well as approaches it from a practical point of view, giving practices and such, which is the advantage to a book by a Tau of a Western mystery tradition rather than a scholar. But many scholars' books are good too, just lacking that angle, I notice.

Re: what book would you recommend
Mon, May 15, 2006 - 9:57 AMI'm reading this right now. As someone totally new to gnosticism, I feel like it is answering a lot of my questions and making me understand what everyone is talking about. It's a pretty intense read - really interesting. I especially like the meditations he gives - feel like it's a great starting point for someone new to all of this. -

Re: what book would you recommend
Tue, May 16, 2006 - 7:18 AMKessinger is a great place to get out of print mystical and spiritual texts, as well as Masonic. They are effiecient and professional.
I have read most of the Baigent and Leigh books. I really liked the Templar Legacy (I think that is the title) and the Dead Sea Scroll Deception. They are always a bit on the sensationalistic side, but a good read and thought provoking.

There is nothing wrong with thinking "out of the box"...we should all be doing the same.
It's the old, "What if" theory with a lot of history and evidence to back it up. That's enough for me to reach my own conclusions. If you read them carefully they never say "this is the truth"...they just say, "image if"...and I like that because it is VERY provoking!

Tue, May 16, 2006 - 11:16 AMOK I know he's fringe, yet his ideas made a lot of sense to me in a way, has anyone got any old books by John Michell?

Re: what book would you recommend
Tue, May 16, 2006 - 8:53 PMI really like the Second Messiah, I just read that a few months ago. Since I am interested in Masonry it was a very fascinating look.
I have not read the Hiram Key, though it is on my list. I am waiting til I go through the first three degrees of Masonry before I read it as I don't like to spoil things. I like a good surprise.
Oh, and on the Baigent and Leigh thing, I think the are very thought provoking and I like them a lot. I just meant that their writing style as journalists is a bit on the sensationalist side. Does make it more exciting.
Oh some other books that I like
The Templar Revelation by Lynn Picknett and The Jesus Conspiracy, The Original Jesus and Jesus LIved in India all three by Holger Kerstin.
Great reads, all of them. I love all of it really.

Thu, May 18, 2006 - 4:16 PMGlad you liked, "Second Messiah", Dian.
I had a feeling about that before I read it and it made sense to me after looking at all the evidence. The dates even matched. It can be no other.
Will look into the books you talked about...but I have to get through my studies first. LOL

Re: what book would you recommend
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 6:24 PMThat is the fun thing about studying this stuff, there is always that stack of books waiting to be read. I am taking a hiatus into some fiction for awhile though, and then I want to get the Jesus Papers.

Mon, May 22, 2006 - 4:39 PMAlthough there's a lot of interesting stuff out there, not all of it really gets into what ancient Gnostics believed.
