The symbolism of the Tree, Christianity versus the Church (Inquisition), the death/resurrection - all very gnostic to me. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend that you do. Get it on DVD & you start picking up little things, esp the way D uses lighting to give insight into the characters. I'm not sure Gnosticism is a foremost concern to D, but, the influences are there. Darren Aronofsky is one of my favorite directors. It goes without saying that the film is quite religious, but it ties together a lot of different religions and beliefs. On one hand you have the Mayans, and then the Christian queen and their mission, but that's just the obvious stuff. Darren is Jewish, I figure that's worth mentioning.
